Watch: Whistleblower Babita Deokaran’s murder trial begins

Deokaran was in the process of exposing corruption to the tune of a billion rand in contracts at Thembisa Hospital.

The trial of the six men accused of arranging a hit on whistleblower Babita Deokaran is set to begin in the Johannesburg High Court on July 17.

They stand accused of the murder of the alleged whistleblower who was fatally shot outside of her Winchester Hills home on August 23, 2021.

They are also accused of the attempted murder of Deokaran’s domestic worker, who was in the car with her at the time of the shooting.

At the time of her death, she was the chief director of financial accounting at the Gauteng Department of Health.

While demanding justice, AOTA members are singing and chanting outside the Johannesburg High Court. Some carrying placards read “Why so long NPA, We demand justice, we will not be silenced and protect whistleblowers.”

Phakamani Hadebe, Zitha Radebe, Phinda Ndlovu, Sanele Mbhele, Siphiwe Mazibuko and Siphakanyiswa Dladla were denied bail on December 20 last year by sitting magistrate Simon Sibanyoni.
