Beauty review: Balayage at Carlton Hair

Balayage is a French word meaning ‘to sweep’ or ‘to paint’. The idea is to create a sun-kissed natural-looking hair colour.

After a very successful lightening of my hair with two full heads of highlights on black box-dyed hair in my last beauty review, I thought it was about time to get even more trendy.

I’m only a 33-year-old mom but my 12-year-old daughter that thinks I’m not-so-cool. Ouch!

Balayage is the celeb hair dye trend that everyone is talking about, but what exactly is this new style and is it worth the hype?

Living at the sea, who wouldn’t want that dreamy ‘just been kissed by the sun’ caramel hair? The difference between Balayage and Ombre is while Balayage is a freehand highlighting technique, Ombre is similar to color blocking – there are no dark pieces remaining in the bottom section of hair to help keep it natural, just a nice transition between the colours.

Just walking into Carlton Hair at the Ballito Junction makes you want to jump up and down with excitement! You just know you are going to be transformed as you watch the ladies walking out almost screeching with happiness over their new, improved crown of glory. Kim Hickman is an internationally-trained Master Stylist and educator.

She hails from Carlton Hair Hyde Park, one of their busiest salons that boasts a clientele of celebrities.

Kim was handpicked from the most talented educators in Carlton Hair to create the national Carlton Hair Creative Team and toured Bangkok in October last year to reveal the latest collection. What also impressed me was the first year apprentice working at Kim’s side, Denise.

She has only been studying hair since January and I was blown away by her knowledge. What I love about my new Balayage look is the softer, less noticeable regrowth lines.

Kim has created a soft, natural look that really does look sun kissed. Kim takes the individual’s haircut and natural hair growth patterns as well as the variance of tones in the hair into consideration, for a totally bespoke finish. Because it’s hand painted, Kim can choose the placements to best complement my haircut, skin and features.

How lucky and blessed are us Ballitonians to get service and results like this right here on our doorstep?

Stand out: I have two this time. Firstly, Kim used the Davines Mask with Vibrachrom colour system on my hair. It uses natural ingredients which increase the colour while minimizing damage.

Secondly, I only have to go for touch-ups every two to three months due to Kim matching the exact colour of my roots.

This is by far the best thing since almond milk!

Take note: Due to all my box colouring hair and damage I had, my Balayage took six hours but the Lavazza coffee and hot chocolate on tap made my day. Literally!
