Couple’s dream of starting marula farm on North Coast becomes reality
It all started when they responded to an advertisement of a sugar cane farm for sale just outside Ballito.
Lavish hospitality was the order of the day at the opening of Sharula Estate Ballito’s Marula Tasting Room last Thursday.
Owners Kim and Warren Tabori-Clark said they were excited that their vision of establishing a marula farm on the North Coast has become a reality, a journey they started nine years ago.
“We have more than 100 marula trees planted and they are between three and six years old. In addition, we have a variety of more than 20 fruit trees in a separate orchard to enhance the flavours of our future marula products.

“We have been waiting patiently for our first harvest which should be in the 7th year. The green marula fruit is the size of a small plum, and very juicy and flavourful. It is high in vitamin C and can be eaten fresh.
“It is also cooked and used to produce juices, jams and alcoholic beverages, while the oil from the nuts is used for cosmetics,” said Kim.
It all started when they responded to an advertisement by Neville McKeown for a farm just outside of Ballito, which previously produced sugar cane.
“Neville drove us up to the top of the farm on the beaten sugar cane tracks. From there we were able to peek through the tall sugar cane and were awestruck by the panoramic views of the
North Coast from the top of the hill. The views reminded us of a wine farm we were privileged to visit on the Greek island Santorini. We knew this was the place to actualise our vision and made our offer the same day.”
The Sharula Estate’s surroundings also make it a perfect location for hosting weddings, conferences and functions.
