Christian mission exorcises litter problem behind King Shaka airport

Two bakkie loads of litter were collected over two days.

The North Coast Jivannadi Mission fraternity went walkabout last week to fulfil another special mission – clearing roadside litter.

The Christian organisation, situated behind the King Shaka airport, ministers to troubled people, including drug abuse victims.

But they became annoyed by the build-up of litter along a service road running parallel to the R102 behind the airport, and members decided to roll up their sleeves and undertake a clean-up job themselves.

Litter was strewn all along the service road behind the airport.

“We discussed stewardship, of what God had given us and the instruction to take care of our environment. So this was an obvious response since nobody else seems to be interested in doing something about the situation in this area,” said Jivannadi Mission director, Greg Denysschen.

“We purchasing gloves and iron rods for the folks who were involved. The rods were sharpened and used as spikes to pick up the litter.”

Two bakkie loads of litter were collected over two days to clear the mess and offloaded at the Buffelsdraai landfill site after being turned away at the Tongaat site.
