Man caught with unlicensed gun and ammunition in Tongaat
Tongaat police charged the man and are investigating potential links to other crimes.
Tongaat police arrested a man with an unlicensed gun in Tongaat yesterday, July 3, and linked him to four further robbery-related arrests in Phoenix earlier in the day.
At around 8.20am, members of the Phoenix Tactical Response Team (TRT) had arrested four suspects in possession of alleged housebreaking and car-jacking implements.
Additional suspects and a silver-grey VW Polo allegedly used in the criminal activities were later identified, leading police to a garage in Tongaat.
When the car arrived, Phoenix TRT and Tongaat Saps officers searched the driver and found a gun with the serial number filed off, as well as 14 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
“The driver, an adult male, was unable to provide lawful authority for possession of the firearm and ammunition,” said eThekwini Saps spokesperson, Captain Carmen Rhynes.
“The suspect was arrested and detained at Tongaat Saps on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition. The firearm has been seized and will undergo ballistic analysis to determine whether it may be linked to other criminal offences.”
Investigations are ongoing.
