Future Focused Learning
We are proud of our educators for supporting our 2018 matriculants in their future successes. Our results are testimony to the dedication from all our staff, not only Grade 12 teachers. We had a number of departments do extremely well and highlight a few below.
The Business Studies department believe that creating a classroom environment which focuses on building strong relationships with their students is imperative to empowering the students to achieve top results. ‘If the students trust that you have their best interests at the core of your teaching, they will respond with phenomenal energy and enthusiasm,’ says Mr Iliffe and Ms French.
The practical application of the content to real world issues allows the students to look beyond the theory, ensuring the subject is both relevant in today’s context and allows the student to incorporate their skills of creative and critical thinking to address social and business challenges in the community.
Mr Pillay, Mr Naidoo, Mr Ncane and Ms Morgan, our Mathematics specialists, say that they cultivate a learning culture that encourages students to always strive for the best possible mark and provide structured support lessons in the morning, afternoon and weekends to further enable their students’ success. They regularly monitor students’ academic performance and communicate with parents while simultaneously creating a learning space that allows for minimal disruptions to the academic programme. Prior to the examinations they offer an intense, structured revision programme and also provide their students with extended opportunities to increase their thinking capacity. Collaboration between all the teachers in the department, ensuring that they monitor each and every student’s progress from the lower grades up to Grade 12, is of vital importance. Crawford College’s in-depth NBT (National Benchmark Test) training programme puts our students at a distinct advantage.
‘As a Mathematical Literacy department we focus on setting quality assessments, of the correct standard, from Grade 10 onwards. We endeavour to discuss relevant, interesting topics and link our work to current affairs at all times. We also revise thoroughly prior to the final examinations by focusing on content that our students find challenging as well as past papers,’ says Ms Morgan.
‘Knowledge with understanding’ is what Ms Kenton believes is the key to a successful year in Accounting. This starts in the junior grades where students are encouraged to work from the basis of knowledge and from there they acquire the skills to solve problems. Constant revision, consolidation and hard work is a given, but a little healthy competition also always motivates the students to achieve their best. By adopting the attitude ‘I can’, students achieve results to the best of their own abilities, and with constant support and belief in them, students realise their potential.
We are committed to inspiring the students to perform to the best of their ability, says Physical Sciences teacher Ms Doherty-Bigara. We value the time spent teaching the students and therefore make sure that each moment spent with them is constructive. Practical investigations and demonstrations are performed regularly to foster a better understanding of the concepts that are taught. Support lessons are provided for any student who may be experiencing difficulties with a section. The students are also exposed to many past examination questions as frequently as possible.
The school’s management team supports its staff by providing an environment in which teachers can be guaranteed to achieve academic success.
Some sound advice from our staff has again ensured top results for the Class of 2018!
