Umhlali Country Club marks 63 years as a favoured community meeting place

The club is a finalist in the Best of Ballito readers’ choice awards.

Umhlali Country Club is built on tradition and has been a North Coast meeting place for 63 years.

The area looked very different back in 1961, but UCC has been one of its most constant landmarks and entire generations of sportsmen and -women, professional and amateur, have since enjoyed its facilities.

From a world class Peter Matkovich designed golf course – ranked in the top 100 nationwide – to busy bowls greens and tennis and squash courts, there is little you cannot do at the club.

“We are very proud of our facilities and what we are able to offer our sporting members,” said UCC general manager, Derick Reinke.

“Those who join the club for sport often see it as a home away from home, such is the amount of time they spend here.”

And if those hours on the course have not paid dividends on the scorecard, you can get personalised lessons at the on-site McKenna Performance Academy with a host of professional coaches on hand.

It is perhaps no surprise then, that UCC won the Best of Ballito 2023 award for ‘Best Sports Club/Coaching’, as well as picking up the ‘Best Golf Course’ title.

“We are very proud to have won those awards last year and to be nominated again in 2024, including in a new category,” said Reinke.

“I think it talks to the atmosphere we are trying to create here, which is family orientated and open to everyone in a beautiful country setting.”

The non-sporting side of UCC is also incredibly popular, with its conference centres and restaurant both popular hosts of events over the years.

And there is some exciting news on the hospitality front, as ‘Ohana at Umhlali’ will be taking over food and beverage operations at the club in mid-June.

Temporary options will be set up while some renovations are done to ensure nobody goes thirsty after their day in the sun.

“Tradition is one of our core tenets at Umhlali but we are always looking to modernise and improve the experience of our members and guests,” said Reinke.

“We wholeheartedly believe in our motto, to treat guests like members and members like royalty.”
