Dramatic police chase at Pretoria shopping centre (video)
Police arrested two suspected robbers following a hijacking at Glenfair Shopping Centre near Lynwood, in the east of Pretoria this morning.
Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dave Miller said a delivery vehicle had been hijacked at the shopping centre at around 10.30am.
A description of one of the get-away vehicles was given to a police helicopter that traced it to an underground parking lot at the Watermeyer Park shopping centre, Rekord East reported.
“The vehicle was found abandoned, but police managed to arrest two of the men who were still in the vicinity,” Miller said.
Police reportedly recovered two R5 rifles and a 9mm handgun in the get-away vehicle.
Miller added that it was still unclear how many vehicles or suspects were involved in the hijacking.
According to Miller, the hijacked delivery vehicle was still missing, while police searched for the other suspected hijackers.
An eyewitness said he had noticed a police helicopter circling the Watermeyer Park shopping centre.
“From what I could see, the police managed to arrest one man who was hiding in the toilet at the Engen filling station. Another one was later apprehended at a different location,” he said.
Police investigations are on-going.
In a separate incident, police were on Friday searching for two suspects who allegedly robbed Sassa employees who were making a cash delivery at a Pick ‘n Pay at Wonderpark Shopping Centre in Pretoria on Thursday.
The armed suspects allegedly demanded cash from deliverymenfleeing the scene with an undisclosed amount of cash.
