Load Shedding

Having your power turned off 2 hours at a time is extremely frustrating and infuriating. Eskom has set out a national schedule that will assist people over the country in planning their routine for the day or preparing for the dark. Have a look at the below schedule set out for the next few weeks and click here to have it printed out. With the electricity being turned off – it doesn’t necessarily mean that it is a bad thing. Inconvenient at times yes but not always bad. Take the time out to sit and enjoy the peace and quiet, read a book or do some much necessary relaxation. Candle lit bathing and dinners is still one of the most romantic ideas of a date so use this to your advantage.

Below we have compiled a list of available facilities, restaurants, shops and more that operate during these hours.

Keep your phone fully charged

Make sure you switch off all electronic appliances, such as an oven or TV, which could have been on before load-shedding

Prepare meals beforehand.

Keep refrigerator doors closed at all times

Make sure lit candles are extinguished before going to bed

Set up a plan for access to security gates when the lights go out

Keep a torch in an easily accessible place

Keep boiled water in a thermo flask to ensure that there is hot water during load-shedding

During load shedding it is only natural to be concerned about how your appliances are taking strain especially when it comes down to the bigger appliances such as your TV or fridge. Here is how you can protect your appliances from any possible damage

Power surge plugs

These devices monitor the flow of electricity that reaches your appliances and can either link to a single appliance or connect to your main electrical panel at home. This acts as a buffer between the socket and the appliance that directs surges in power away from your electronics. “We don’t recommend buying these second-hand as they can only absorb so much damage before they need to be replaced. The lifespan of a surge protector is measured in joules – the more joules, the better.”

Unplugging your appliances before the outage

Allowing the power to come on for at least 5 minutes before switching your appliances on

Switching off your stove
