No miners were trapped after Earthquake
All mine shafts had been evacuated shortly after the quake hit.
Following yesterday’s earthquake at midday in Orkney, outside of Johannesburg, rumours were circling that some miners were trapped in 11 shafts in mines in the North West near the centre of the quake.
ER24 paramedics, who were dispatched to the mines following reports of miners being trapped, confirmed there were no such entrapment.
Mine managers had ordered the evacuation of workers from shafts shortly after the quake hit and after about an hour they were able to confirm there were no miners trapped.
According to AngloGold Ashanti, 17 employees at its Vaal River operation were injured, but no one was seriously injured.
Families in North West suffered the most damage to their homes and a 31-year-old man died when a wall collapsed on him.
