Taking up the helm at Curro Mount Richmore

Mr Thomas brings an impressive 21 years of experience to a school which caters for three months old right through to grade 12, and says that he intends to continue with the main focus of the school: To teach the school's pupils to never take their eyes off God.

High quality education just received an upgrade with the appointment of executive head, Bryn Thomas, to the Curro Mount Richmore team.

Mr Thomas brings an impressive 21 years of experience to a school which caters for three months old right through to grade 12, and says that he intends to continue with the main focus of the school: To teach the school’s pupils to never take their eyes off God.

“This is done to shine through you when you are trying to achieve your plans, no matter which area your aspirations are in.

“I’ll help continue building this important pillar, as the future of our nation is in the hands of the young people we set the example for.”

Born in Durban, Mr Thomas grew up in the Eastern Cape and has studied at a number of institutions including Rhodes University, the University of South Africa (Unisa) and Milpark Business School.

His previous teaching experience includes King William College in the United Kingdom, Belvedere College in Ireland, Hudson Park in East London, St Stithian’s in Johannesburg and, latest, St Dominics in Newcastle where he was executive head.

“I always wanted to be a teacher. I am energised by the opportunity to grow people, both children and adults. I realised while still at school that I loved the occasions where I could teach others things I had learnt. It felt good to see the “light bulb” moment when someone realised that they had grasped a concept.

“I’m pretty bossy, so being a teacher leader is something that has come with the experience of being in education and the opportunity to lead my peers is a privilege,” he said.

Married to his high school sweetheart, Samantha, Mr Thomas took up the mantle at Curro Mount Richmore in April. He and the teaching team have already concluded much of their planning to reopen the school after lockdown, despite the challenges faced.

“The Curro Mount Richmore staff have also been teaching remotely and the children have adapted well to the educational revolution,” he says, adding that he has received messages from some of the grades asking if a blended system of learning could be introduced going forward.

“I am a committed man of God. He has blessed my wife and I with an amazing son, Caleb (10) who is a massive fan of Lego,” says Mr Thomas, who ended off saying that he is also a passionate supporter of the Sharks rugby team and that he both enjoys the ocean and travelling.

“Above all, I am a proud South African who loves his country.”
