#LoveYourEyes: Ballito’s Dr Yavische Reddy gives the gift of sight

Dr Reddy will perform five free cataract surgeries this month for local patients in need.

The annual observance of World Sight Day in October holds special significance for Ballito ophthalmologist Dr Yavische Reddy.

Aside from sharing a professional ethos with this year’s #LoveYourEyes theme, Dr Reddy welcomes the opportunity to give back to the community she serves. Through a partnership with Netcare and Alberlito Hospital, she will perform five free cataract surgeries this month for local patients in need.

“Patients are selected through a stringent application process by Netcare and must meet certain criteria,” said Dr Reddy, who has already completed three of the five surgeries.

“Alberlito hosts the surgery for free, while the anaesthetist and I voluntarily waive our fees too. At the end of the day, giving back is what it is all about. It’s why I got into medicine in the first place.”

To mark World Glaucoma Day in March, Dr Reddy also hosts free glaucoma screening days at her Ballito and KwaDukuza rooms.

Glaucoma is one of the most common conditions she sees, but her eye-care expertise extends across a wide variety of cases. Dr Reddy treats keratoconus, cataracts, vision abnormalities and diabetic eye complications, as well as providing general ophthalmological care, comprehensive eye examinations and surgical interventions.

“Keeping track of small changes in your vision is the first step,” she said.

“If you notice any floaters, narrowing of vision, flashes of light or experience any discomfort, then you should seek professional care. Prevention is always better than treatment.”

People over 40 should consider adding regular glaucoma screenings to their healthcare routine, particularly if they have other risk factors or underlying conditions.

Early detection can help protect your sight and may prevent more costly treatment later.

Dr Reddy practises from Suite 3, The Well in Ballito, and 110 Hulett Street, Adams Medical Centre in KwaDukuza. Contact 061 434 0191 or 032 586 0040 to make a booking.
