Ballito mom accused of pretending her child had cancer to extort goodwill

A case of fraud has been opened against the woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her children.

A Ballito woman who allegedly falsely claimed her young son had terminal cancer to fraudulently raise funds for his treatment is being investigated by Umhlali SAPS.

The 27-year-old mother of two was allegedly using her three-year-old son to extort money from various charities in Durban and Cape Town.

A case of fraud has been opened against the woman, who cannot be named to protect the identity of her children.

This comes after she was arrested in a separate fraud charge related to non-payment of bills for accommodation at a guest house in Salt Rock between June 13 and 18.

According to police, the mother had allegedly used fraudulent cheques and proof of payments as she moved from guest house to guest house.

Police spokesperson Captain Nqobile Gwala said cases of fraud were opened at Umhlali and Berea police stations for investigation.

The mother had allegedly lied to people and said her son was dying of cancer to elicit donations from well-meaning people.

The case regarding the cancer scam was opened by her ex-husband. The boy has subsequently been returned to his custody following her arrest.
