Ballito ‘hostage situation’ a false alarm

Security were called to the centre and the rumour mill went wild.

Reports of a hostage situation at Ballito Lifestyle Centre earlier today proved to be unfounded.

Messages circulated like wildfire on social media of the supposed hostage situation in the centre following an incident at Capitec Bank where security were called at around 1.15pm.

This, they say, is the normal protocol.

“What happened was that a customer in Capitec was panicked due to a personal issue,” said owner of the Ballito Lifestyle Centre, Bruce Rencken.

“A manager called for security backup, and we had the SAPS come through as well as a number of security companies.”

“Because of the security presence, a big crowd gathered outside Capitec, but it was diffused and resolved.”
