Ballito cameras help nab stolen car
Police applaud the use of the numberplate recognition cameras in fighting crime.
One man was arrested and a stolen car recovered yesterday morning, thanks to the SNIPR camera installed in Ballito.
The man was arrested after he and his friends allegedly drove off from a Ballito petrol station without paying for fuel.
The SNIPR automatic number plate recognition cameras flagged the vehicle as stolen from the Durban suburb of Chatsworth and an alert was sent out.
Security companies gave chase on the M4 until the car crashed in Westbrook.
Four men jumped out of the crashed car but one was arrested by the security guards.

The car was taken to Tongaat SAPS.
Umhlali SAPS spokesperson Vinny Pillay said the cameras had made a huge difference in fighting crime.
”We really appreciate the people and organisations that came up with the idea of these cameras, and the people who made it their task to install them. To everyone involved, we say thank you for the assistance, ” said Pillay.
Since implementing the ANPR system in November 2018, the community funded cameras have already helped crack more than 35 cases and led to the arrests of wanted criminals and recoveries of hijacked vehicles.
The cameras are linked to a national database of suspicious or wanted vehicles.
