The area has seen a rapid increase in the number of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Four men are expected to appear in the Kranskop Magistrates Court this week after they were arrested for the illegal possession of firearms and ammunition on Sunday.

Following a tip-off the Saps searched several homesteads in Kranskop.

“The aim of the operation was to eradicate illegal firearms in the area,” said provincial Saps spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker.

According to Brigadier Naicker, the area has seen a rapid increase in the number of illegal firearms and ammunition.

Police seized 89 rounds of ammunition and firearms including a shotgun, rifle, pistols and revolvers.

The men arrested were aged between 39 and 62.

The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Khombinkosi Jula welcomed the arrests.

“Such operations are still ongoing in the province to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms which also contributes to serious and violent crimes,” he said.
