Hotbed of stolen cars found at Maphumulo

Three brothers arrested for car theft, with crimes committed across the province.

Hot on the heels of men wanted for robbery, police pounced on three brothers at Mvozane Reserve, Maphumulo on Saturday.

The joint operation saw police from Umhlali K9 Unit, Maphumulo Saps, Public Order Police, Newark Saps and other security companies recover several stolen vehicles.

A truck, light motor vehicle and numerous bakkies were recovered.

“Preliminary investigations revealed that these vehicles were stolen from around the province, including Pinetown, Umbilo, Kwambonambi, Richards Bay and Durban Central,” said provincial Saps spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker.

Naicker said a tip-off saw a security company lend a helicopter to help find the stolen vehicles.

“The suspects were spotted traveling in a stolen vehicle when they drove into a bush in an attempt to evade arrest,” said Naicker.

Naicker said that owing to the dense bush, two vehicles could not be salvaged.

The brothers arrested, aged between 27 and 33, were detained at Maphumulo Saps and will be charged with possession of stolen property.

Investigations to link the accused to other robbery and motor vehicle theft cases is on-going.
