Hambanathi residents torch building where Andile ‘Bobo’ Mchunu was allegedly beaten to death #JusticeForBobo

Police divers recovered the remains of a person on Friday that are thought to belong to the 16-year-old boy.

A business was torched in Hambanathi last night after human remains – believed to be those of a 16-year-old boy who was allegedly beaten to death for stealing alcohol  – were found at a river in Tongaat on Friday.

More than a hundred Hambanathi residents gathered holding candles and singing a struggle song, before setting fire to the building, said to be a tavern.

The story of Andile ‘Bobo’ Mchunu has outraged South Africans, after the shocking video of his beating went viral.

The boy was reported missing on Tuesday, April 28 and the hashtag #JusticeForBobo has since started trending on Twitter.

Six people were taken in for questioning on Thursday, May 7 and the human remains were discovered on Friday, said police.

Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Jay Naicker said a case of kidnapping had been opened at Tongaat police station.

“Detectives from Provincial Organised Crime Unit took over the investigation and made six arrests.

“On Friday police officers from the Saps Search and Rescue Unit went to Noordsberg Road where human remains were recovered in a river,” said Naicker.

Hambanathi resident Sbongiseni Mkhize started a petition titled ‘Justice for Andile Mchunu (Bobo)’ on change.org.

The petition is directed at police minister Bheki Cele and has been signed by over 12 000 people.

The petition claims that Bobo’s siter came to the tavern to fetch him after it was reported that he was being beaten but she was told to go fetch him some new clothes for him.

When she returned, she was told that Bobo had escaped.

“Which is hard to believe because a video of him being unconscious has been circulating and a person in his state would’ve never been able to escape.

“And now the boy is nowhere to be found. The community of Hambanathi needs justice to be served for Bobo,” wrote Mkhize.
