Four police officers who allegedly stole more than R100 000 from a business in Shakaskraal have been charged with theft and defeating the ends of justice.
The officers from Marianhill Saps – aged between 37 and 48 – were arrested on May 26 by detectives from the KwaZulu-Natal anti-corruption unit after receiving information linking them to the alleged robbery.
The men appeared in the KwaDukuza magistrates court for a formal bail hearing and three of the officers were granted bail of R5 000 while the fourth was released on R2 000 bail.
The case was postponed to July 22.
The robbery allegedly took place at a cash and carry store owned by a Chinese national.
According to the reports, the high-ranking officers, wearing uniforms and driving a police vehicle, entered the business premises claiming they were searching for illegal cigarettes, then robbed the owner.
