N2 rock throwing returns with two close calls at Durban

Rock-throwing on the N2 has been a recurring problem for motorists between Durban and the North Coast.

Rock throwing from N2 bridges reared its ugly head again this weekend with two incidents reported on Saturday night.

A 36-year-old Kloof resident, Kate Levenstein, was on her way home with her husband when a rock was thrown at their car.

“Gavin (husband) and I were on our way home on the N2 after visiting friends at Durban North.

“We saw something that looked like a bramble in the middle of the road.

“As my husband swerved around it, a rock was thrown from the pedestrian bridge after Nandi Drive before the M19 turn off.

“Luckily, it went through the centre of the windscreen and through to the back seat.

Although I got hit on my left arm, we made it home fine and we are fine,” said Levenstein.

Police said a 22-year-old woman had also been a victim of rock-throwing on the N2 between Umhlanga and Durban that night.

Provincial police spokesperson Colonel Thembeka Mbele said the woman had been driving on the N2 freeway when a rock was thrown from the bridge, damaging the roof of her vehicle.

“A case of malicious damage to property was opened at Sydenham police station for investigation,” said Mbele.

The issue of rock-throwing on the N2 has been a recurring problem for motorists between Durban and the North Coast.

In December 2017, a teenager and her seven-year-old brother were killed in a rock-throwing attack.

The family from Vereeniging were driving north on the N2 shortly before 9pm when a large rock was thrown at the car from a bridge between Tongaat and Ballito.

A young man was lucky to survive a rock-throwing incident while he was travelling on the N2 northbound in January 2018.

The 26-year-old Umhlali resident was passing underneath the first bridge after the Tongaat toll plaza going north towards Ballito when a large rock hit his windscreen.
