Hambanathi man killed by ‘kangaroo court’ after allegedly raping a child
At least one case of child rape is reported weekly in the Tongaat area.
A man was killed by Hambanathi residents at the weekend after he allegedly raped a nine-year-old girl.
Ethekwini district police spokesperson, Captain Carmen Rhynes, said police found the 56-year-old man lying in Chili Road, bleeding profusely.
“The victim’s son informed police that his father had been assaulted by the community,” said Rhynes.
She said the man’s son took him to the Tongaat Clinic, but he later died in hospital.
Tongaat Child and Family Welfare Society social work manager Jo Moodley said the issue of child rape was one of the society’s biggest challenges, with at least one case reported weekly.
“Most of these cases are from Hambanathi, Magwaveni and informal settlements around Tongaat,” said Moodley.
She said these cases were usually reported by community members or teachers.
