Suspected hit-and-run driver tracked and arrested at Tongaat informal settlement

Pedestrian found dead on Watson Highway.

Tongaat police are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a pedestrian was struck and killed by a car on the Watson Highway on Monday night.

The driver fled the scene.

According to the Community Emergency Response Team’s (CERT) Riza Sadack, they were alerted to a body lying in the road along the M43 just after 7pm.

It appeared as though the man had been knocked over by a car and had suffered fatal injuries. Medics declared him dead at the scene.

“The suspected vehicle was then tracked down and located at an informal settlement close by,” Sadack said.

Police arrested the driver whose vehicle had shown severe impact damage.

Provincial police spokesperson, Constable Thenjiswa Ngcobo, confirmed that a case of culpable homicide had been registered for investigation.
