Several scrapyards were also searched, leading to the confiscation of suspected stolen scaffolding equipment and a bakkie allegedly used in transporting the stolen items.

Sixty-two people, including 42 illegal foreigners, were arrested in KwaDukuza central business district on Friday during a special police operation.

“Operation Shanela” focused on illegal immigrants, drug possession, illegal firearms and dangerous weapons, counterfeit goods and compliance inspections of liquor outlets.

iLembe cluster spokesperson Alex Thomson said during the operation 60 heroin capsules, dagga and counterfeit goods valued at R140 000 were found.

Several scrapyards were also thoroughly searched, leading to the confiscation of suspected stolen scaffolding equipment and a bakkie allegedly used in transporting the stolen items.

The arrested people appeared at the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Police will have more similar operations throughout the district as part of ongoing efforts to curb crime.
