North Coast schools hit in crime spree
Among the targeted schools were Tshelenkosi Secondary School, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Secondary School, Melville Primary School and Lloyd Primary School.
A spate of break-ins has plagued schools along the North Coast over the past month.
The Courier is aware of at least six schools that were broken into since the beginning of October.
KwaDukuza police recently arrested three people in Lindelani, allegedly linked to the school robberies in KwaDukuza.
KwaDukuza Saps spokesperson Siphesihle Myeni, said the accused were found in possession of laptops and computers suspected to be stolen from the schools.
Among the targeted schools were Tshelenkosi Secondary School, Inkosi Albert Luthuli Secondary School, Melville Primary School and Lloyd Primary School.
The crime spree has obviously placed security measures in question.
“In some cases the perpetrators confronted school security guards, threatening them or tying them up,” said Myeni.
He said the police were actively investigating and hoped to make more arrests.
Tinley Manor Primary was hit twice in one week.
This prompted a visit from Education MEC Mbali Frazer on November 4, who came to assess the damage at the school.
During the break-ins at Tinley Manor Primary, valuable equipment and trophies were stolen, followed by the theft of essential items such as the PA system, money from the school tuck-shop and printer ink.
Three people were arrested in connection to this incident.
Frazer announced plans to fortify Tinley Manor Primary with new fencing and promised to enhance its security.
She called upon communities to actively collaborate with law enforcement agencies to protect schools, urging them to unite against those attempting to turn schools into criminal playgrounds.
