Taxi driver killed by passenger in Ntshawini township

Saps urged to tighten gun control in KwaDukuza.

A taxi driver was shot and killed along the R102 Main Road in Ntshawini, outside KwaDukuza last week.

Sphamandla Shandu, a 32-year-old man from Mandeni, was found dead by police behind the wheel of a Toyota Quantum.

A passenger seated behind him allegedly demanded both cash and a firearm before shooting him.

Whether the assailant made off with these items remains unclear, as Shandu’s money bag was found open.

Meanwhile, police arrested a 31-year-old man, who was found in possession of an unlicensed firearm in Newark on Tuesday.

Another 22-year-old was arrested after he was found in possession of 42 red and white capsules of heroin and 30 rock cocaine pieces in Newark.

KwaDukuza community policing forum (CPF) chairperson Dr Mfuneni Zungu again stressed the urgent need to address the issue of illegal guns in KwaDukuza.

“It’s time to make sure that all the legal guns are accounted for, because some families do not return guns when the owner passes away, which is something that needs to be addressed.

“Strict gun control in KwaDukuza is needed,” said Dr Zungu.
