ANPR cameras hailed as crime-fighting champions in Ballito and Salt Rock

Plans are in place to gradually upgrade existing cameras with newer technology, ensuring the continued effectiveness of the surveillance network in combatting crime.

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras have made a huge difference in fighting crime in Ballito and Salt Rock over the past six years.

The SNIPR automated number plate recognition cameras have been in use since 2018 after funds were donated by RE/MAX Dolphin Coast as part of its #saferstreets campaign.

Addressing the recent Ballito Neighbourhood Watch (BNW) annual general meeting, chairperson Morné Steffens said the cameras are a major asset to Ballito and Salt Rock neighbourhood watches.

“Because of these cameras about 59 arrests have been made, they helped with the identification and recovery of stolen vehicles as well as picking up vehicles with false number plates,” said Steffens.

Over the years, security companies also began investing in their own camera systems in and around Ballito, which Steffens said was an added advantage as more strategic points could be covered.

“That makes a huge difference in terms of monitoring the streets. However, all these measures do not mean residents must let their guard down,” he said.

He emphasised that many residents still did not pay enough attention to secuurity at their homes.

“Some residents leave their windows open at night, while others do not set their alarms when leaving their homes.

“That leaves a gap for opportunistic theft. You pay for security, so use it.”

Steffens said during the past financial year maintenance costs came to R30 439, while data costs came to R12 540.

He said the aim is to replace two cameras a year with newer technology. So far, two of the seven cameras have been replaced.
