Cable thieves cut the lights

The main cable that feeds the Chakas Rock substation was stolen last night.

Various parts of Ballito, Salt Rock and Chakas Rock had their lights cut-off in the early hours of this morning.
Thieves made off with 15 metres of the 33kv cable that feeds the Chakas Rock substation, which plunged the area into darkness.
Head of KwaDukuza’s electrical engineering, Nhlakanipho Biyela confirmed that cable had been stolen. He said power should be restored by this afternoon.
“We have a contractor on site who is replacing the cable. He has estimated that power should be back in about three hours,” said Biyela.
Once the cable has been replaced, security guards will be posted at the substation.
