UPDATE: Cable theft plunges 3 KwaDukuza wards into darkness
Copper theft has been a regular occurrence on the North Coast in recent weeks.
Cable theft at the Shakaskraal substation left the residents of wards 22 (Salt Rock), 20 (Etete) and 28 (Shakaskraal) without electricity since 5.50am this morning.
Ward 22 Cllr Privi Makhan said while technicians had originally expected power to be restored within 5 hours, electricians were only now restoring power to the affected areas at 3pm.
“Protection cables were stolen and vandalised at the Shakaskraal substation, on the Eskom side, which resulted in the tripping of the entire substation.
She said Eskom teams were busy switching the substation back on.
“The damage to infrastructure and the cost to ratepayers, caused by cable theft, simply cannot be quantified.
“Saps need to get behind us in order to curb these activities that have been allowed to continue unabated.”
She promised to continue to monitor the situation closely.
Change: In the original story Cllr Privi Makhan reported that electricians had only expected to restore power by midnight.
