Battery theft paralyses Mandeni municipality sparking political allegations

The municipal manager vowed he would take swift action to get the trucks back on the road again.

Service delivery at the Mandeni municipality ground to a halt last week after thieves stole the batteries of 16 trucks and plant machinery.

The services mostly impacted were the maintenance of gravel roads and waste collection.

Municipal manager Sizwe Khuzwayo said investigations into the theft have started.

He apologised for any inconvenience caused and emphasised the significant impact such criminal acts have on Mandeni’s overall service delivery.

Khuzwayo called on community members with information about the incident to come forward and assist the investigation.

The ANC in the General Gizenga Region believes the break-in was politically motivated.

Regional secretary Sphesihle Zulu linked this incident to a previous case involving the theft of water pipes, suggesting the involvement of what he referred to as “political criminals”.

He highlighted the severe consequences of water shortages on the daily lives of Mandeni residents.

Zulu said the ANC considers such criminal acts as high treason and urged law enforcement agencies to spare no effort in bringing the perpetrators to justice.
