No service at Ballito licensing office due to staff absence

Residents say the disruption has forced them to seek alternative ways to renew their vehicle licences, often at additional cost and inconvenience.

Ballito residents are growing increasingly frustrated as the licensing office at Nokukhanya Luthuli House remains non-operational.

The office has been largely inactive for nearly two months, reportedly due to the prolonged absence of the single teller who is off sick.

When the Courier visited the office, we were told that the teller was still on sick leave and that no licensing services were currently being rendered.

Residents say the disruption has forced them to seek alternative ways to renew their vehicle licences, often at additional cost and inconvenience.

Ballito resident Gwenda Gilder shared her frustration.

“It is not right that basic services are unavailable and that residents must either travel far or pay more for something that should be straightforward and accessible.”

She had to renew her licence at a local Spar at an additional cost of R180.

A Tongaat resident, who works in Ballito, said she had to pay a penalty after missing the 21-day grace period for renewal. With limited time between work and the option of travelling to Stanger or Verulam, she missed the deadline.

In South Africa, driving without a valid licence disc is illegal. The disc confirms that a vehicle is roadworthy and compliant with the National Road Traffic Act. While there is a 21-day grace period, missing it can lead to fines, back payments or in extreme cases, vehicle impoundment.

Ward 6 councillor Ayabonga Zwane confirmed he had received complaints from residents, but said he was still awaiting a response from the municipality regarding the situation.
The municipality had not responded at the time of publication.
