Ballito Pickers

Ballio resident John Raapt has a unique hobby, collecting antique toys. Raapt specifically collects Dinky toys, which were originally produced in England.

Like the “American Pickers” seen on DSTV, Ballito has its very own antique collectors who buy and sell anything old and valuable.
Self-proclaimed ‘Ballito Pickers’, John and Estee Raapt have a passion for collectibles which comes from their background in buying and selling jewellery.
John was previously a diamond polisher and valuator in Johannesburg. He still trades in a variety of jewellery today and has always “loved diamonds”.
However, John’s most prized collectibles are his Dinky toys. These are miniature cars, originally made in England. No longer manufactured, the small toys are quite valuable and are sought after by collectors around the world.
“I still remember the first Dinky toy I got from my Godmother when I was four,” John recalled. He still has a number of Dinky toys from his childhood among his large collection of toys.
John is trying to build up a complete set of certain models. This makes the resale value much higher. He estimates that each Dinky toy is worth anything from R300 to R1000, depending on the type of toy and its condition.
“They are worth much more in mint condition,” said John.
If the toy still has its original packaging, it’s worth even more. Although he spends a lot of time on buying, selling and posting antique items online, John hopes to start restoring his beloved Dinky toys more regularly.
Through newspapers and websites, John and Estee are able to buy and sell antiques they are looking for. Although they are formally retired, the couple enjoy trading and collecting antiques.
“It is really a hobby/retirement/business,” Estee joked.
Their collection includes books, jewellery, paintings and a range of toys to name but a few.
After 45 years of marriage, they still share each other’s passion for “picking” and are always on the lookout for all kinds of vintage items.
