‘Bricks’ off to World Champs

He's as strong as two bricks!

Sphamandla “Bricks” Ngubane will represent South Africa at the 2013 Kyokushin Karate World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The tournament that starts on Friday, October 4 will host fighters from around the world.
Bricks (37) lives in Tongaat with his wife and two children. Originally from Greytown, the current South African champ trains with his friend and sensei, Thami Mthethwa, at their dojo in Tongaat.
Being brought up with karate around him, Bricks fell in love with the sport from a young age.
“Before I started, when I was young, my mother’s sister used to do karate and that is where I picked it up,” said Bricks.
At 14 years-old, Bricks began doing karate at Matimatolo school in Greytown. By 1997 he was competing and has been crowned SA champ four times since then.
Bricks will compete in the open division in Bulgaria which is for fighters over 95 kilograms. This is not the first time he has been selected to fight for South Africa.
“I represented South Africa in Japan in 2001, Swaziland in 2002 and Russia in 2009.”
He hopes to do well as he wears South African colours once again.
“I am working towards being the world champ and my aim is to be known in South Africa and the world, I just want to leave my mark.”
