Grandfather sentenced for rape

Child repeatedly raped by grandfather.

A 63-year-old man was convicted to 25 years imprisonment yesterday for repeatedly raping his granddaughter.

On Sunday, February 9, the accused was caught by his wife while raping the 11-year-old girl at their home in the Mandeni area.

The child told the grandmother that it was not the first time she had been raped by her grandfather. A case of rape was then opened at Newark SAPS and was investigated by KwaDukuza Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

The Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni applauded the sentence.

“The sentence will send a clear message to like-minded would-be offenders that the police will trace, arrest and successfully prosecute them”, she said.
