Wheeling in the sun and waves

Former polo player gets a taste of the waves.

A beach wheelchair enabled former polo player Nick Rey to swim at the beach with his family for the first time in over nine years last weekend.
Son of former Miss World Penny Coelen Rey, Nick suffered a tragic accident when his horse fell on him during a polo tournament in 2004. The accident left him severely brain damaged and completely dependent.
The family has been swimming with Nick in the pool since he got his wheelchair a few weeks ago. They went to the beach for the first time on Saturday and his wife, Gayle said he enjoyed it so much they had to take him back on Sunday.
“I just want to thank everyone who organised and supported the fundraiser for Nick’s beach wheelchair last year. I wish they could have seen the excitement on his face when we went to the beach,” said Gayle.
Nick family and friends held an auction with guest speaker Patricia Glyn at the Litchi Orchard in November last year. The proceeds from the auction went towards getting Nick his beach wheelchair and Gayle said donors continued pouring in their support even after the event.
The Rey’s also wish to thank Lou Kelly, Jeremy Ebb and those who donated prizes and snacks to the event.
