Massive power outage hits Salt Rock

Serious cable fault throws area into darkness

Salt Rock residents have been in the dark since 9.30pm last night, with no promise of light any time soon.

Residents are outraged that the municipal call centre has been giving different reports of the cause of the outage, and no firm time when it will be back on.

Sheffield, Salt Rock, Etete, Shakaskraal and Simbithi Eco Estate are among the areas affected.

Ward six councillor Colin Marsh, who is assisting in the Salt Rock (ward 22) area, said the situation is a crisis.

“There is a serious cable fault between Imbonini and Shakaskraal, which probably occurred due to the weather. The electricity department is working on repairing it, but power may be out for a large part of today. We must first ascertain if the spares to repair the cable are available locally, if not they will have to be sourced from Durban.”
