Umhlali Prep chess champs
The school's talented team will go to the KZN top schools’ trials in October.
Umhlali Preparatory School chess players achieved an outstanding victory at the Ilembe top schools’ chess trials held at North Coast Primary School in Stanger on August 2.
The teams will now proceed to the KZN top schools’ trials in October to try to qualify for the national South African schools’ championships to be held in Pretoria in December this year.
Chess coach Spa Nkosi was impressed with the players’ stunning five out of five winning streak with only one player out of 12 dropping a game in the entire tournament.
He attributes this to the team’s commitment, dedication, focus, confidence and perseverance.
The pupils, ranging from eight to 13 years old have developed excellent chess prowess under the coaching, motivation and expertise of Nkosi.
Another huge contributing factor to the pupils’ success is the commitment and support received from their parents.
As a school, Umhlali Preparatory recognises the huge benefits of children playing chess at an early age.
Principal Astra Russell was commended on recognising the value of chess and affording it a substantial place in the school curriculum.
The team also thanked Mrs V. Murugen for her highly committed support of all the Umhlali chess players.
