Fire threatens Ballito

The fire raged between Wakenshaw estate, the Ballito Junction, the Ballito Bay Mall and Simbithi estate.

A large veld fire swept dangerously close to homes and shopping centres at the entrance to Ballito the morning.

The main concern being the proximity of the fire to Wakenshaw estate, the Ballito Junction, the Ballito Bay Mall and Simbithi estate.

A strong berg wind sent the flames ahead of the KwaDukuza fire fighters as they fought to bring it under control.

Specialised Rescue Unit spokesperson Quentin Power said fire trucks were being rotated and refilled as quickly as possible.

“The gusting wind is not helping as it fuels the fire in the dry bush and cane that has been desperate for rain for some time,” said Power.

IPSS Specialised Rescue paramedic Paul Herbst confirmed that no injuries had been reported.

Power however sent the Courier a moving photograph of a beautiful cameleon that perished in the blaze, possibly one of the many inhabitants of the veld that did not survive.

The feral cat feeding station was also damaged by the flames.
