Monkey rescue in Ballito

Ballito resident's assist injured monkey.

An injured female Vervet monkey was rescued from a tree inside the property of a Ballito home after spending two days in the canopy.

Ballito resident Lewaine von Alleman spotted the monkey in her neighbour’s tree and when it had not moved the next day she became concerned. She called local animal lover Karen Zastron who asked the Specialized Rescue Unit to assist.

The rescue unit members climbed up the dense tree to bring the primate to safety.

“The monkey was badly dehydrated and the wound was infested, sadly it died on the way to the vet,” said Zastron.

She believed the animal could have been bitten by a dog.

“The Monkey Helpline had been tracking an injured monkey since last Friday but it had evaded capture. It is possible that this was the same animal,” she said.
