Sew in love with fabric

They would love it if someone could assist them with basic sewing training.

A group of Salt Rock domestic workers have found an interesting way to spend Thursday afternoons.

The 15 ladies, who all work at homes in Sheffield, Salt Rock and Shakaskraal, have formed a small sewing group and meet weekly, sharing knowledge and skills.

Group founder Martha Neves said they are not professionals but learning a new skill keeps them busy.

“It also helps us earn some extra money,” she said.

When the ladies first met they would sew, crochet and do beadwork by hand.

Sembcorp Siza Water recently sponsored the group six sewing machines and an overlocker, which has made their handiwork easier.

“We may not know much but we love to make clothes and fix up hems. If our things are good enough, we sell them,” said Nonhlanhla Khumalo.

Faith Gudazi said they would love it if someone could assist them with basic sewing training.

“Only one of us knows how to properly work the machine, so we are moving slowly. We want to learn how to make things from scratch, using patterns. We would be grateful for extra material, if anybody is throwing some away.”

The women want to make pillow cases, pinafores and curtains to sell.

They meet every Thursday at the Salt Rock Library from 1pm to 3pm.
