No judgment, just love

A family of support through addiction

A space free of judgment and prejudice, filled only with love, understanding and acceptance.

Through their addiction support groups, Grace Family Church Umhlanga has helped hundreds of people through a range of addictions.

Now they want to stretch their helping hand to Ballito.

The first support group was launched at the Umhlanga Campus in 2009, said pastoral counselling director Madz Deyzel.

“In 2011 we realised that family and friends of addicts also needed support and launched a group for them. We want to lead people on a recovering journey, ultimately leading them to Jesus Christ.”

The meetings follow a Bible-based 12-step programme, open to addressing any nature of addiction including drugs, alcohol, gambling, smoking and pornography.

The Ballito group will be run by Andy Smith.

“We are not here to categorise addiction or judge. We just want to see people healed,” said Smith.

Phil Tomlinson, who also followed the programme, said what sets the group apart is the social element.

“We strongly believe in becoming a family. Even if you relapse, you know you can come back and try again. There is no start or end to the 12 steps; you go at your own pace.”

Another feature is the monthly ‘Tell Your Recovery Story” evening, where addicts share their inspirational experience of triumph over addiction.

The Ballito group will be a closed meeting every Tuesday from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, at the GFC Ballito Campus on Ballito Drive.

The first meeting will be on October 7.

If you would like to get involved in counselling or helping recovering addicts email counselling@grace.za.org or call Madz on 031-5759300.
