Lessons from birds

Who knew that birds, how they are created and their occurrence throughout the bible could hold so many meaningful messages? ‘Birds of the Bible’ was the theme explored at the recent annual general meeting of the natal association of flower arranging hosted at the All Souls Anglican Church in Sheffield last week. Members from flower arranging clubs and flower and garden clubs throughout KZN attended the AGM. Clare Houston, the guest speaker, gave an uplifting talk on “The Gospel according to Birds”. Houston explained how there were life lessons we could learn from birds and how each different bird points to the glory of God. A few members of the Umhlali Flower and Garden Club and the Westville Floral Art Club created beautiful floral displays incorporating the theme. Founding president Rosemary Ladlau and her daughter Jane Matkovich made an impressive display of their interpretation of a wetland creating a backdrop to Houston’s talk. The Umhlali Flower and Garden Club meets on the first Wednesday of every month from 9.30 am to 12 pm at the Anglican Church. They are encouraging more people to join, young and old. “This is a wonderful club to be a part of. It is just so good for the soul,” said Ladlau. “You feel so creative and inspired being able to make something out of nothing. This is something you can do for yourself, to enrich yourself,” said Elma Slabbert. Flower arranging demonstrations, gardening tips and tricks and well as excursions, among other things, are offered.
