Tongaat police foil robbery

One suspect still at large.

Excellent work by the Tongaat SAPS stopped an armed robbery in its tracks yesterday.

Police received a tip off of an impending armed robbery at the Shoprite Centre in the Tongaat CBD yesterday and were patrolling the area.

Media liaison officer Lt Mandy Govender said police checked a suspicious vehicle, a white BMW, which they found to have been reported stolen from Durban.

“When police approached the car, two suspects got out and tried to run away. A shootout then began,” she said.

Officers managed to apprehend one of the men while the other ran toward the railway lines and has still not been found.

“The suspect who was arrested will be taken to the station where the BMW was reported stolen, and charged there. Investigations are continuing. Well done to our offices on their excellent work!”
