The report will remain open for public comments until October 21, and is available for viewing at the Tongaat Beach public library.
The draft scoping report (DSR) for the proposed desalination plant in Tongaat is now open.
The report will remain open for public comments until October 21, and is available for viewing at the Tongaat Beach public library.
A group of residents of La Mercy and Tongaat remain strongly opposed to the construction of the 150Ml/day desalination plant.
They claim the plant will harm marine life and surrounding nature, as well as be an eyesore in an otherwise peaceful area (Residents against desalination plant, Courier, August 13).
Umgeni Water has since defended the plant, claiming brine discharge will not harm marine life.
A short summary of the proposed plant indicates that the plant will intake about 333 Ml/day, producing 150 Ml/day of freshwater when at final capacity.
A rough estimate of brine discharge into the sea is placed at 183 Ml/day.
A public meeting for residents and concerned and affected parties will be held at the Tongaat Town Hall at 6pm on October 8.
Comments received will be considered when the final draft scoping report is compiled.
An electronic version of the report is also available on the internet at: www.csir.co.za/eia/TongaatDesalination/.
