2000 plates a week

Get involved and help Food For Life KwaDukuza serve 15 000 plates of food on October 11.

Just like a food version of the old ice cream truck so the Food For Life KwaDukuza truck drives around poverty stricken areas hooting its horn.

At the sound children run frantically with their bowls to line up at the set meeting point to receive a free meal.

The Courier recently accompanied Food For Life KwaDukuza on one of their bi-weekly meal distribution trips in Zamani Township.

The truck was packed with four large plastic bins containing vegetable breyani that would serve approximately 1000 plates of food that day. Food For Life KwaDukuza, a non-profit organisation, is affiliated with Food For Life South Africa and is currently distributing 2000 free meals a week to the hungry in orphanages, schools, old age homes and poor areas.

“We would like to serve free meals every day, what we are doing is just the tip of the iceberg. I would like to make KZN a hunger free zone. If we had the support and the funds we could do so much more,” said Vinoed Shiopersad.

Their last big project took place on Mandela Day, July 18, where they prepared and distributed a total of 11 750 meals with over 200 volunteers and sponsors.

The next project is coming up on Saturday, October 11. They hope to better their last count by preparing 15 000 meals (60 pots) and distribute them across KwaDukuza.

Food For Life is encouraging and urging businesses and individuals to get involved by sponsoring, preparing or distributing meals.

They do not only ask for money but for the donation of cooking ingredients or volunteering to help.

You could also partner with Food For Life to serve meals on a weekly basis or you could sign a monthly debit order to help them maintain their weekly distribution.

For more information of how you can get involved or to view the list of cooking ingredients they require go to their website on www.fflsa.org or email fflkwadukuza@gmail.com
