Witchcraft, miracle or hoax? – a chicken ‘gave birth’ to a kitten
What came first, the chicken or the kitten?
The Dolphin Coast is abuzz with the unlikely news that a chicken in Shayamoya, near Shakaskraal, has apparently given birth to a kitten.
The photo of the chicken and ‘her’ kitten is being shared widely on Blackberry Messenger and Facebook.
The ‘miraculous event’ allegedly took place on Tuesday, and some residents are insisting they saw the birth take place.
A man, who asked remain anonymous, said he heard a chicken making strange sounds near his home.
“I went closer and it looked like a rat was coming out of the chicken. Then, we saw the kitten.”
The chicken is apparently very protective over the kitten and is not allowing anyone to come near it.
The Courier spoke to Ballito Vet Hospital Dr Kevin Stevens, who said this is biologically impossible.
“There is no way a chicken could birth a cat. It can mother it very well, but never give birth to it,” said Stevens.
Stevens said a chicken does not give birth, but lays eggs to reproduce.
“The kitten must have lost its mother somewhere and the chicken is taking care of it.”
Many people, however, believe this is a result of witchcraft.
