Pet owners need to take precautions to protect their animals during the Diwali festival of lights.
Ballito Vet Hospital’s Dr Kevin Stevens said the best way to deal with the problem is to desensitise animals to noise.
“Ideally pet owners should stay indoors at home with their cats and dogs and comfort them by touching and reassuring frightened animals. Close the windows and turn up the music,” said Stevens.
Stevens said most animals would benefit from some sort of calming medication.
“Consult your vet about which homeopathic or scheduled drug would best suit your animal’s specific needs. In most instances there will be no consultation fee,” said Stevens.
Diwali is set to start on October 23 or 24 depending on the cycle of the moon. However celebrations and firework displays are due to start as early as tomorrow.
