Good year for Curro

Mt Richmore branch officially opens.

Curro Mt Richmore, the 19th school in the Curro education group, was opened last week by the group’s founder, Dr Chris van der Merwe.

The school, which opened its doors this year with a little over 100 pupils, ends the year with 332 pupils and is expecting to take in more than 400 to start the new year.

Dr van der Merwe told parents and pupils that he and his wife started their first school in Cape Town in 1998 with 28 pupils and that it took 10 years to reach 1000 pupils.

The PSG Group bought a 50% stake in the company for R50m and today Curro Holdings is valued at over R8bn.

“Our vision is to have 80 schools by 2020,” said Dr van der Merwe. “The driving force of the company is passion for education at all levels. This country needs leadership and our goal is to produce leaders.”

He cited unwavering courage, self control and a keen sense of justice as being qualities which good leaders needed to succeed.

“Our ethos is embedded in Christian ethics,” he said.
