Beaches on Dolphin Coast closed

Shark nets removed at some beaches to prevent damage with strong swell approaching.

With a strong southerly groundswell approaching, the shark safety gear has been removed at some beaches on the Dolphin Coast and south coast to prevent any damage.

The KwaZulu-Natal Sharks Board’s (KZNSB) Operational Mangement has been tracking a strong south westerly swell that will hit the coast by Saturday morning.

The KZNSB’s Mike Andersen-Reade, head of operations, said in a media release sent out this morning that they are expecting a strong southerly groundswell that can reach 3m by Sunday.

These large swells may result in the movement of and damage to shark safety gear.

In consultation with the affected municipalities, shark safety gear at some of the smaller less popular bathing beaches have been removed today to minimise the damage and losses to the Sharks Board..

All major beaches will however remain open.

The beaches that are closed on the Dolphin Coast are  Blythedale , Willards Beach, Westbrook, Umdloti and Bronze Beach.

It is anticipated that all gear that is removed this morning will be replaced by next Tuesday after the swell has backed down.

The following beaches are also closed from today: Uvongo, Lucien (Margate north), Ski boat bay, Sysu (Kent bay), Trafalgar, Leisure bay, Port Edward, Umzumbe, Southport, Isipingo, Karridene, Umgababa, Alkanstrand and Country Club to Laguna Beach included.
