Police chase down wanted criminal in Groutville

Hijacked BMW recovered.

A dramatic police pursuit resulted in the arrest of a high profile criminal suspect this morning in Groutville.

The KwaDukuza crime prevention unit was conducting a routine road block on the R102 at Melville when they flagged down a suspicious looking car.

The driver of the BMW stopped but then immediately took off again. The police fired shots at the fleeing car before pursuing it in a high speed chase. One of the officers on foot said: “No normal person would run away from the police like that so we knew the vehicle was either stolen or carrying drugs.”

The driver side scraped a taxi when recklessly turning onto the Groutville Link Road and continued towards the N2. The suspect abandoned the BMW after coming to a halt on one of the N2 on-ramps, facing oncoming traffic. The chase continued on foot with police officers chasing the man through Thembeni. Officers took different routes and eventually cornered him near the Groutville hall.

KwaDukuza SAPS’ Colonel Bheki Zondi was thrilled by the arrest.

“This was a big arrest as this man is involved in many cases in different areas,” said Zondi.

He said the BMW the man was travelling in had been hijacked in Mtunzini earlier this month and so far he has been charged with being in possession of a stolen vehicle and malicious damage to property.

The police are still busy questioning him to pin point the other cases he is implicated in and to get information on the whereabouts of his accomplices.
