Taking the lift turns out to be a dangerous choice during the load shedding period.
A seven-year-old boy was trapped in a lift at Saxony flats in the Dunkirk Estate, Salt Rock, for an hour and a half on Sunday, due to the electricity outages.
Netcare 911, the KwaDukuza fire department and IPSS Specialised Rescue were on the scene to help the anonymous boy.
The rescue team used a lifting bag, which is a type of rubber mat that was filled with high pressure air to force open the lift doors.
“This is the first time that someone has been stuck in one of our lifts,” said Dunkirk Estate manager, Peter van Wijk.
“We have generators in place to keep the security up and running, but the lifts unfortunately are not connected to the generators.”
He said they have learnt from this situation and he will be attending a course in the next few days to learn how to override the lifts.
Nonetheless, stairs sound like a safer option.
